Combustion performance of hybrid rocket fuels loaded with MgB2 and carbon black additives

Paraffin-based fuel has a great potential for several innovative missions, including space tourism, due to its safety, low environmental impact, high performance and cost. Despite the fact that liquefying solid fuels increases regression rate of hybrid rocket motors, incorporating energetic materials into can still improve performance. The objective scope this study is increase characteristics paraffin-based by using magnesium diboride (MgB2) carbon black (CB) additives. cylindrical-port grains were manufactured with various additives percentages in mass (wt%: CB-2% MgB2-10%) tested laboratory-scale ballistic motor under gaseous oxygen. mechanical results revealed adding CB MgB2 improved ultimate strength elastic modulus fuels. addition these fillers increased hardness developing strong interaction paraffin matrix. Thermogravimetry (TG) showed inclusion thermal stability average rates loaded 32% 52% higher than those unmodified wax, respectively. characteristic velocity efficiency was found range 68%–79% at an O/F ratio 1.5–2.6. oxidation/combustion matrix described four-step oxidation process ranging from 473 K 1723 K. Finally, combustion model proposed, processes discussed detail.
